Announcements for February 28, 2011

Tomorrow is Pink Day for Bullying Prevention! Wear Pink Wednesday to show you are not going to be a bystander anymore! Sonics — Let’s turn SRHS into a sea of pink to show there is no room for bullies at our school.

Attention Graduates: Time to sharpen your appetites. Our next Grad pot luck is on Wednesday, February 29th at 5:30 p.m. Please sign up in the office.

Everyone be sure to bring your skates tomorrow for free skate at the rink during lunch hour.

Students working on sets for Seven Brides will be working Wednesday after school and Sunday afternoon 1 – 3:00 p.m. Also — check the theatre bulletin board this week for March Break working dates.

Beginning Thursday, March 15, 2012 RESOLVE 2026 will be held every Thursday from 12:15 – 1:15. Everyone is welcome to come hang out and play games in room 2026! It’s FREE!

The SRHS store, which is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays, now has lollipops on sale!

Congrats to the SRHS Improv team. They made it to the final round of the regional competition last weekend. They proved once again that SRHS is the dominant school in the lower NB area.

Monday February 27th 2012

Several Sussex High students competed over the weekend at the provincial figure skating championships in Riverview. Geena Oxford won the gold medal in dance and a silver medal in interpretive. Anna Miller & Maddy Malone won a silver medal in pairs
and Samantha Feener & her partner Maren Miller were crowned Jr Bronze dance champions.

Congratulations to the SRHS Lady Sonics Hockey Team who defeated Hampton High School last nightby a score of 5-0. It was a total team effort both offensively and defensively by all the Lady Sonics. Kudos to Kaleigh Robertson for earning the shutout! The Lady Sonics start the Finals of the Southern Conference on the road against KVHS on Tuesday night at 6:15pm. The game will be at the QPLEX. The 2nd game of the best of 3 series will be played in Sussex on Wednesday night at 8:15pm.

Attention Grade 11 and 12 students, Explore offers students the opportunity to pursue their studies in their second official language over a five-week period during the spring or summer months at a number of institutions across Canada. Participants receive a $2,000 bursary that covers tuition fees for the course, instructional materials, meals, and accommodation. The program offers courses adapted to your level (beginner, intermediate, or advanced), as well as many activities that allow you to meet with others from across the country who wish to improve their French. The bursary does not cover : Registration fees ($200) Travel costs. The deadline for applying is Feb. 28th. There are application forms in the Guidance Centre.

There will be a course selection presentation for students and their parents, on Tuesday, February 28th in the SRHS library at 6:30 pm. The course selection process will be outlined for students who are currently in grades 10 and 11. Following the March Break students will begin choosing their courses for next year.

The Sonics boys hockey team begins their first round playoff series tonight against Hampton at the 8th Hussars Arena at 8:30pm. Come out and support your Sonics as they try to knock out the Huskies for a second straight year! GOOD LUCK GENTLEMEN!!!

There will be a Seven Brides for Seven Brothers all cast rehearsal today until 8pm. Supper break is from 5:00 to 5:45.

Set workers please meet in the Art room from 3:30 to 5pm.

Congratulations to Josh Vincent, Joseph Dunfield, Cole Keith, Kole Hayward, Luke Hawthorne, Anthony Luffman, Sam Wallace and the Bantam A Team for taking Gold at the Ted McKnight Tournament.

Congratulations go to Nick Huggard on being selected by the coaches in the South West Conference as an All-Star for 2011-2012. Nick will play in the All-Star game on Sunday Feb 26th which is being held right here in Sussex. The ladies game is at 1pm and the men’s game is at 3pm.

Congratulation to the girls curling team who won the Southern Conference Championship on the weekend. Congratulations also to the mixed curling team who also qualified for Regionals by finishing 4th in the Southern Conference.

Hey Sonics – Winter Carnival is coming up! Fun activities will be planned for all of next week from the 27th to the 2nd. Join in the fun!

UNB ON THE SPOT ADMISSIONS – February 24th – If you are a grade 12 student interested in UNBF or UNBSJ, you can take part in an on-the-spot admissions day here at SRHS. It will be held in the library seminar room on Feb. 24th in the afternoon. Bring in your paper application or fill out the application for the university on line by Feb. 22nd. The application fee is $45 but if you are applying to both universities you still only have to pay $45 as opposed to $90 during this one day. If you have applied and are still wondering if you have been accepted, sign up for an appointment, as you will be told whether or not you have been accepted on the spot. The benefit of going through the on the spot admissions process is that you will find out immediately if you are accepted in your desired program. Do not delay if you are applying to UNB sign up in the Guidance Centre today.

Anti-tobacco fact of the day – Second hand tobacco smoke contains nearly twice the amount of tar and nicotine, five times more carbon monoxide and 50 times more ammonia than the smoke directly inhaled by the smoker. YUCK!!! A single can of spit tobacco contains three times the amount of cancer causing chemicals found in a pack of smokes. Now ask yourself – is it worth the risk.
