Are you currently a grade 11 male student who has the ability to succeed at university, but for whatever reason, are considering not continuing with post-secondary education? Before you make your final decision check out the Opportunity Scholars program! The Opportunity Scholars Program is a partnership between the NB government and Mount Allison University, to encourage greater male participation in University education. Check it out at an information session on Wednesday, June 6th in the Guidance Centre.

Grade 11 students – How would you like to spend one week at the Terry Fox Centre in Ottawa next year? You could be chosen to attend a theme week in Encounters with Canada where you have a choice to learn about one of the following: the arts, the environment, Canada Remembers, International affairs, Journalism, Law, Medicine, Politics, the RCMP, Science and Technology, sports and fitness, and Vimy’s coming of age. All you need to do is pick up an application form in the Guidance Centre, and sign up for an interview. Interviews will take place either Thursday or Friday, June 7th or 8th during periods 5 and 6. The interview will last approximately 10 minutes and you will be questioned on both your knowledge of Terry Fox and why you feel you would be an appropriate candidate for this experience. The cost of the trip is $675, but you will be given some financial support with the cost. More information will be shared as it becomes available. Students working on the Great Big Water Bottle project are reminded to meet after school today in the lobby to help with the promo video tape.

This week is the last Battle of the Sexes week! Boys are currently winning with a score of 3-1! This week it’s a Lemon Eating Contest.

Friday June 1st is Red and Black School Spirit Dress-up Day. Wear Red and Black tomorrow and show your school spirit Sonics!

Tomorrow the entire school will be participating in Disability Awareness Week’s “Walk and Roll”. The walk will take place at 12:00 and last 15 minutes. Come prepared to participate!

The JV Sonics rugby team finished their season last night with an impressive 50-36 win over the visiting Belleisle Bears. Marty McKenna led the Sonic attack with three tries, while Keegan Worden added two. Nick McCullum, Cole Keith, Brett Cripps-Caines, Cody Constantine and Daniel McCullum all added a try.

Fine Arts Night When? Tonight at 6:30. Where? Here at SRHS. Come on out an enjoy a wonderful evening of arts and entertainment.

Grad Choir is practicing Wednesday at 12:20 in the music room. If you wanted to join but could not come last week you are still welcome.

The yearbooks are here! All students who pre-purchased a yearbook are invited to the courtyard on Thursday for a book signing party. Grades 9, 10 and 11 will come during the first half of period 4 and the grads will come down at 11:45. Bring your favorite pen! In the case of rain, this event will be held in the theatre. So if you have not yet bought yours, please see Mme Betts to reserve your copy. Cost is $55.

Encounters with Canada Announcement

Do you like to travel, meet new people and like adventure? If you are currently in grade 11, consider taking advantage of the Encounters with Canada trip to Ottawa for a week next year. More information and applications can be found in the Guidance centre. The deadline for application is Monday, June 4th. Have no regrets, check it out!

The SRHS track team did an excellent job competing at regionals on Saturday. All athletes did an amazing job and gave it their all. Congratulations to Ashley Black, Marty McKenna, Erika Miller, Bradley Bernard and Mike Phillips who have qualified for provincials in Moncton this Saturday.

There will be a Midget Baseball practic3e Wednesday May 30th at 6:30 at the Sussex Corner field.

Most people with disabilities have the same dreams and the same goals as everyone else. Sometimes they may need a little help to achieve their goals and other time they will be giving help to others. Full inclusion of all of our citizens should be our shared objective. “Ready and Able to Work!” A message from Disability Awareness Week – May 27th – June 2nd.

Girls Minor softball practice tonight from 6:30-8:00 at Carr Field. This is for all levels (squirt, pee wee, bantam, and midget). Even if you haven’t registered yet but are interested in playing house leage softball, please attend this practice.

Are you interesting in volunteering to help your community? Think about how good you feel when you do an act of kindness. A member of our Sussex Youth Center Committee and Tanya Warren of the RCMP, would like to meet with interested students who could help clean grafitti off the old mall walls. An information session will take place in Room 1119 (Miss Kamminga’s room) on Tuesday May 29, at 12:15 pm. Interested students are welcome.

Grade 12 students planning on going to prom need to sign up in the office to advise their form of transportation for the parade.

Fine Arts Night is awesome! And it’s this Tuesday evening. Write it on your hand…put it in your phone…make a mental note! Bring a date if you want and come on out on Tuesday evening at 6:30. See you there.

Could all 2012 yearbook staff and all those who applied for the 2013 staff please meet in Mme Betts’ room at 12:15 on Tuesday May 29th.

The interview schedule for next year’s leadership team is now available in the office and in Mr. Belyea’s room. Interviews are taking place during advisory and at noon in Mr. Belyea’s room on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week.

Fine Arts Night is next Tuesday night. There will be art displays 6:30-7:15 and a great show in the theatre until approximately 8pm featuring music/drama/dance highlights from the school year. Donations at the door to cover costs. Spread the word to friends and family.

Don’t forget Sonics – tomorrow is Bad Plaid dress-up day.

Grads – If you missed the first practice of the Baccalaureate Choir it is not too late to join. We are practicing Friday at 12:20 in the music room.

The Kiwanis Club will be serving breakfast at 8:00am followed by displays by local businesses beginning at 9:00am. At 10:00am the RCMP will be hosting a Bike Rodeo for children under 12. There will be fun filled and educational events happening for children until 2:00pm. There will be track and field this week on Tues. Wed. and Thurs. after school in preparation for regionals this weekend.

A choir is needed for the Baccalaureate service on Sunday June 17. All graduates are welcome to attend the first practice on Wed May 23 at 12:20 in the music room.

The JV Sonics Rugby team lost to KV on Thursday by a score of 24-17. Scoring tries for the Sonics were Brett Cripps-Caines, Keegan Worden and Cole Keith. John Monahan also added a convert.

There is band practice today after school 3:30-4:45 in the Music Room 2026.

Students who are working on the Great Big Water Bottle project please ask permission to attend an information meeting tomorrow in Mrs. Hill’s advisory.

Let’s face it Sonics, Thursdays can be a pretty dull. Want to pep you Thursday up? Here’s your chance…this Thursday at 12:30 there will be an awesome Improv show here at SRHS. Admission is only 50 cents at the door. Oh! Did we mention our special guest…none other than Peter McComb…a Sonic grad of 2011 and former Improv star!

Info on some up and coming events from the Town of Sussex Recreation Department:

YOUTH JAM NIGHT will be held from 6:00pm until 8:00pm on Tuesday nights for the next 4 weeks. May 22,May 29, June 5 and June 12. It is free of charge and for students Grades 6 to 12. It will be held in the Community Room above the 8th Hussars Sports Centre. Youths are encouraged to bring their instruments and gear and come jam with other budding musicians!

For both STAFF AND STUDENTS: Lifestyles Fitness Studio is holding FREE Zumba in the park on Saturday, May 26 from 11:00am to 12:00pm at Burton Park to celebrate Sussex and Area Wellness Month. Get out there, get active!

Finally, for Sussex residents, we will be having our annual Town Wide Yard Sale on Saturday, June 9th from 8:00am to 1:00pm. Maps will be available at Town Hall and Ultramar for $1.00 starting June 4th. To be a vendor, cost is $10.00 with registrations being accepted at Town Hall. Proceeds going to Canada Day Celebrations.

New Brunswick Information Technology Council Guarantees Tech Jobs to High-school Students – The NBITC is pleased to once again offer job guarantees to up to 25 of this year’s high-school graduating class. Successful applicants will be guaranteed a full-time job at current market rates with one of the participating companies on completion of a mutually agreeable technology related post-secondary degree or diploma. The Council is also pleased to announce it is partnering with Rising Stars to offer a mentoring program to the “The Class of 2012”, many of who will also be provided with summer employment, work-terms, and potentially scholarships. Details on how to apply can be found at www.NBITC.ca/class-2012 . The application deadline is June 15th.

Don’t miss SNACK AND YACK today at the Higher Life Christian from 3-5pm. Also this Saturday night there will be an outdoor concert by the band LAST CHANCE MARIE. The concert will be starting at 6:30 just outside of the Higher Life Christian Center. Come check it out!

Girls’ Softball Club will be on Monday May 21st from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm at Carr Field. Minor Softball Registration Forms are available from Mr. Belyea room 2057 or at source from sports.

Are you in grade 12 wondering how you are going to pay the costs for post-secondary training at university, community college or a private institution next year? Student loan applications have arrived. If you would like a paper application, you may find one in the Guidance Centre or you may access the application online at: www.studentaid.gnb.ca . You will also find a very helpful video online. For scholarship information, students should be checking out the Guidance Wiki on the Sussex Regional High School website, where all the scholarships are listed, with a brief description about each. The Guidance centre houses copies of the application forms. Please take the time to check out the application forms, as some scholarships go unclaimed.

On May 15th while at the NBIAA Sportsmanship Banquet in Fredericton, Nick Huggard was selected as one of the top 24 NB high school athletes to receive the Raymond Legere Sportsmanship Award. Congratulations Nick! Way to do us Sonics proud!

Anyone interested in playing Midget Baseball this summer should meet at the Sussex Corner field Friday at 6:30.

The boys close out the regular season this Thursday in KV.
